HDE as part of ADE

The past years the harder styles of dance where a bit ignored during ADE. “After three years of discussion it’s finally there” says Rogier Werver of Q Dance. “If we would just organize a party under our name, we’d probably only get our regular visitors, and almost none of the ADE visitors. That’s why we’ve chosen for this concept, a day at our office, with meeting rooms, workshops and seminars. Doing that we can bring the harder styles of dance under the attention of the regular ADE visitors.” Until now there wasn’t really a place where hard dance professionals could unite. Q Dance now hops into that gap to fill it. It’s a bit like Felix Meritis, but just for the harder styles.

TrouwAmsterdam: a new label is born

You probably know about TrouwAmsterdam – Trouw in short – as a club. But Trouw is branching out: they recently started a newspaper and a bookings agency, and during the ADE the Trouw label will be launched.

The both infamous and prestigious Gouden Kabouters are going global; The ennobled garden gnomes with a gold spray tan are ready to judge international festivals, clubs, Dj’s and their haircuts. Besides all the fun and craziness that surrounds the Gnomes, winning one is also quite a big deal.

Bringing a controller to your gig isn’t a surprise these days. Spinning with vinyl is almost a gimmick or something for dinosaurs these days. And cd’s, well, that’s something for lazy dinosaurs who don’t want to carry a recordcase with them. Next to all before mentioned things Töken almost seems something from the future.

This year the festival features a list of new locations. One of those new places with a festival program is Code 21 in the Reguliersdwarsstraat, just a stone’s throw away from the Leidsestraat – which connects the Kalverstraat with the Leidse Square. Anyway, the little café is a new location worth the visit.

People often forget about Amsterdam-North, even Amsterdam’s inhabitants. Every now and then a new location pops up from the underground, to dissolve into nothingness. But one place is booming. A place once used to assemble ships, then used by squatters as a sanctuary where they could master their arts, subsequently discovered by party people and just recently discovered by the creative upperclass.

All right, so Amsterdam might be known as the Venice of The North – so are Copenhagen, Giethoorn, Manchester, Birmingham, St. Petersburg and many more (all less fun to visit though) – but boat parties aren’t considered business-as-usual around here. After all, it isn’t Miami with its white yachts, filled with scantily clad gals and crystal. Nope, it’s Amsterdam with red brick houses under overcast skies. Oh yeah, and a couple dozen house boats.

Some of the festival names are out there. So what's the plan?

It’s mid-August and the first names are announced. Who would have expected Kelis? Or what about Magnetic Man – maybe a bit less of a surprise, but still a huge booking. And of course the world- famous and re-appearing Dimitri will attend ADE as well. We’ve been at his first gig after his sabbatical, in TrouwAmsterdam, and we can tell you it’s worth the visit.

People are browsing through MySpace profiles, Facebook updates and Twitter posts just to see if their favorite artist will be attending the night programme. Or the lectures. Some of the clubs in Amsterdam just breath professionalism. Everything seems well thought after, and everything seems to be there for a reason. Without trying to be an ass: Sugar Factory is just a little bit different. Not that it isn’t well thought after, but it just seems to be a bit more, well, cozy and unorganized. Like it’s there for the music and only the music.

Amsterdam: the creative capitol of The Netherlands

Amsterdam not only is the ‘normal’ capitol of The Netherlands, it’s also the creative capitol. And that can be traced down from the big companies that have their HQ in the Dam – like MTV – to its inhabitants. And of course, amongst them are loads of graphic designers, writers, actors, musicians, producers and dj’s.

Yup, we know what you’re thinking. Well, kind off. It may be something like “what on earth is Pure Liner!” Well, it is not a club. But there are parties on that location during the festival. Ok, ok, here we go: it’s a boat. Yes sir, a boat, with 5 parties with the name Inter Lab Sessions. With dj’s from Russia, Turkey, Romania, The UK, the US, The Netherlands and Swiss. It might be one of the most international locations.

Melkweg and its ADE marathon

Sure, if there’s a festival in town, why not try to make something out of every day. That seems to be the thought the Melkweg had when they were busy making their plans for the coming ADE. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and last but not least Sunday all have their own and respectable line ups. You’d almost forget that there’s more to do in town.

Going Dutch: Dutch producers abroad

The Dutch have always had a certain kind of spirit for trade. Now that products don’t have to be distributed via a specific country, our spirit seems to have told us to distribute ourselves. The Dutch go abroad. Are going abroad. Were going abroad. Keep in mind that The Netherlands are small, so we often have to seek our luck elsewhere.

During the festival there is loads of stuff to do - of course, you may say. From a small last-minute drink in an empty showroom or shop, to a huge party with over a thousand visitors, it’s all part of the deal, and they’re all good fun to visit. Each is special in its own way. Evotions is one of the organizations who will drop one of those big parties during ADE. Well, two actually, but let’s put one of them in the spotlight.

Intergalactic FM announces it's line-up

As the deadline for crews to hand in their line-ups comes near, more and more crews are bringing out theirs. This week the line-up of the Intergalactic FM party at the Flexbar got announced. Let’s hope the crew doesn’t have to make some last minute changes like last year. Thumbs up for this great line-up.

He’s the creative force behind one of last decade’s best dance albums: Airdrawndagger. His name? Sasha. He’s one of the greats in the dance industry, always innovating and looking for new ways to re-invent dance music. He’s been around since the late eighties, but he’s still getting himself in the picture. A great achievement and all the more reason for ADE to invite him to take part in The Artist Debate.

The club scene in Amsterdam seems pretty solid. Clubs have been up and running for years and they rarely dissolve into oblivion. But the once notorious iT did. And after several years of vacancy, on the very same spot a new club has opened its doors to a new and younger crowd. A crowd that probably only has heard about the former club through stories about the good old days, by people who could have been their parents.

In Brazil however, things are a bit different. ADE is more than a conference; it's a 40 club festival as well

Just a conference in a scene that thrives on parties is impossible. That’s why ADE is and has always been about more than just that. Next to the daytime programme, including ADE next and the conference, there’s the night programme: the festival. And it is the festival that will turn the city of Amsterdam upside down, with artists, promoters, managers and club owners walking, cycling and driving from club to club.

2010: Fifteen years of ADE

This year will bring the fifteenth edition of the annual Amsterdam Dance Event. The event will take place in Felix Meritis and the beautiful hotel Dylan, in the middle of the city centre of Amsterdam: a labyrinth of canals, beautiful green trees, fancy restaurants and of course clubs. This year the event will be even bigger than in recent years, with more than 40 clubs partcicipating. Attracting visitors from all over the globe, ADE is one of the most important dance conferences around. Oh, and let's not forget about the festival which will take place in over 40 clubs around town.
