The recipe for smooth networking

22 October 2010

Let’s shatter your idea that we’re going to give some sort of magic formula here. Of course we were attending the official ADE opening drink on Wednesday, and yesterday we were at the network bash at the old church De Duif. The ingredients on both days? Free drinks, loads of people who consider themselves to be incrowd, loads of business cards and loads of demo cd’s.

Sure, the openings drink in the Dylan is a bit smaller, and of course it’s a bit less extravert then the network bash, but still. It’s a good opportunity to speak to people who still are kind of fresh. Maybe they’re enjoying their first drinks – plural, because when it’s free it usually doesn’t stay with one beer – but they aren’t as tired, lazy, empty headed as they will be on Saturday, for instance. And as every year people stand astounded by the beauty of the Dylan Hotel. Those waterfall like taps, the black stairs, the marble, the gardens. They all are able to amaze you time and time again.

And yesterday night – we’re still a bit light headed – we visited the equally beautiful church De Duif at the Prinsengracht. From 8 pm ‘till midnight it formed the stage for the annual network bash, that was being held for the seventh time this year. And don’t be mistaken, it’s not only for managers, journalists, promoters, but it’s also pretty cool to be there when you’re an artist. Or dj groupie by the way, because it’s not weird to see Steve Rachmad talking to Derrick May – damn those guys look alike, kind of – or to see the legendary Dimitri having a blast with people from back in the days.

And also on this evening drinks come free. And also on this day it seems to be a good ingredient for successful networking. Stacks of demo cd’s are being handed out, business cards are going from hand to hand, hands are being shaken non-stop and yes, some carefully timed dance moves are being made every now and then. You can’t spell Amsterdam Dance Event without Dance I guess. Around midnight everyone is friendly being worked outside. People are quickly searching for company to go to a club, a party or just home or back to the hotels. We? We went home, trying to have some rare moments of sleep. Hoping those will help us handle the free Mojito’s.
