Ed Banger's Secret Of Success?

10 September 2010

Ed Banger Records chief and erstwhile Daft Punk manager Pedro ‘Busy P’ Winter chatted to Skrufff this week about his astonishingly successful career and revealed that as well as following his enthusiasms and doing pretty much exactly what he likes, he’s also totally non competitive and focused.

“The absolute key for success is being patient,” Pedro also suggested, “Although we're living in a fast world, it's essential to keep cool and relax and take some time and to wait for the right moment for things to happen.”

Quitting law school after three months both to concentrate on managing then unknown contenders Daft Punk and ‘to party’, he turned Daft Punk into France’s biggest superstars since Jean Michel Jarre, going on to set up Ed Banger in 2003 (while he still managed Daft Punk). Snapping up then (relatively) unknown contenders Justice as one of Ed Banger’s first signings, he also promptly turned them into global megastars and has since signed a stable of younger acts including DJ Mehdi, Sabastian, Feadz and Mr Ozio.

“It’s all about patience and this is what I keep on telling my Ed Bangers boys,” he stressed.

“Of course, I'm surrounded by young kids who are 23 or 24, they're releasing one record which might be played by Too Many DJs and Laurent Garnier and they're saying to me 'Pedro, now I'm big' and I'm saying 'no, no, no, wait. You've only released one record; you still have a lot to do and a lot to prove.’

“I’m a patient boy, and this is what I’m trying to pass on to my young artists. I’m asking them to take their time. We are not in a rush. There are probably 50 or so top DJs who are performing worldwide every weekend and I am a part of this group now. It takes time. Some of them say ‘oh yeah, but I don’t have shows every weekend’ and I tell them ‘Yeah, I started DJing in 1995, 15 years ago. Of course, it takes time.’ I tell them ‘you've got lots to learn and mistakes to make, wait and your time will come’. This is what is happening to all of us slowly, slowly.’

Quitting managing Daft Punk in 2008, Pedro’s since gone on the A List level DJ success through his alter-ego persona of Busy P, though admitted he considers it ‘complicated’ to say whether he feels full accomplished just yet.

“I think it's too early to say. Everything is analysed too quickly these days,” he said.

“Of course, I feel Ed Banger is happening and is achieving something substantial but we'll see what happens in the future. Maybe in ten years’ time no-one will remember Ed Banger."

Pedro will be appearing as a keynote speaker at this year’s Conference, being interviewed by Jonty Skrufff.
