In the Spotlight: Dorian Concept
25 August 2010It’s one of those names that doesn’t ring a bell with most people, but when you let them hear a track, they probably have some kind of “aha erlebnis”. His track Trilingual Dance Sexpierience has been played out by masses of dj’s. Sometimes in its original speed, often at -8.
But of course the man has a lot more to offer than just that one track. He has played at North Sea Jazz festival already, and at Lowlands. This year it’s time to have him playing at the Melkweg during ADE, at the same night as Flying Lotus. Seventh heaven for those who love the whole beat scene. Other than FlyLo or other beat producers Dorian Concept is not from the States or from the UK, but from Vienna.
Oliver Johnson, his real name, is a virtuoso keyboardplayer and has a master degree in sound-design. He found inspiration in jazz, but also in jazz-based hip hop and electronica. He made himself a master in improvising and didn’t follow a musical training. Improvising is something you do yourself, not something you learn from a teacher. Maybe his music isn't the easiest listening experience, it sure is a good one. Check him out on thursday in the Melkweg
