In the spotlight: Sasha

21 July 2010

He’s the creative force behind one of last decade’s best dance albums: Airdrawndagger. His name? Sasha. He’s one of the greats in the dance industry, always innovating and looking for new ways to re-invent dance music. He’s been around since the late eighties, but he’s still getting himself in the picture. A great achievement and all the more reason for ADE to invite him to take part in The Artist Debate.

Like many, Sasha – real name Alexander Paul Coe – was introduced to dance music in the late eighties at the infamous Hacienda club in Manchester. It didn’t take long for the youngster to make his first forays in the scene, by teaching himself to mix, and volunteering for a tour with another local dj. Later he began playing at illegal raves to make some money to pay for his records. It resulted in a job at the Hacienda, where he learned the skill of key-mixing from Jon DaSilva.

Subsequently, he teamed up with John Digweed for a couple of years. Or let me rephrase that: for close to ten years. After the collaboration he made his acclaimed album Airdrawndagger, that is considered to be one of the top dance albums of the past decade.

Nowadays, he’s back with Digweed and still touring the world. He once learned the skill of mixing with vinyl. There wasn’t a thing like cd players with pitch control, and don’t even think about laptops with Ableton. But in today’s age he’s deejaying completely digital. He even buys vinyl and converts them to digital  audiofiles.

Every one of these aspects makes Sasha an interesting person. That’s why he’s invited by ADE to join The Artist Debate. Always guaranteed for interesting moments, as the artists can discuss about almost everything they want. Of course the debate is led by a pro, but a little fuzz keeps the debate exiting. In the next weeks we will introduce other artists who will join the debate.
