Around the World: Dance in Brazil

19 July 2010

The way the dance scene operates and evolves in the western world is probably well known. There may be some differences between countries, but over all it’s kind of the same thing. In Brazil however, things are a bit different. Cultural influences differ from those in the western world, and the Brazilian life-style has hardly anything in common with, say, the German way of life.

Despite these differences there is a booming dance scene in Portuguese speaking Brazil. In recent years its hip hop-flavoured, aggressive ghetto music made its name outside the favelas. The sound – known as baile funk - went straight into clubs all over the world, being picked up by lots of the bigger dj’s. On top of that comes a thriving economy. But hey, we’re talking music here. And no, not just the fabled carnival music of Rio and Sao Paolo; electronic music. Think artists like Gui Boratto, DJ Marky, Amon Tobin, Sany Pitbull and of course the well-known jazz composer and musician Deodato.
